Same day in India: Thursday 29 October. Hindu date: Ashwin Krishna Chaturthi.

Moonrise in London, Thursday 29 October

18:31 GMT

Low in the north-east. The fast ends once you have seen the Moon.

The Moon climbs slowly, so behind houses and trees you may not see it until about 19:15 to 19:55 GMT. An upstairs window facing north-east, or an open space, helps.

18:31 is the moonrise panchangs give: the centre of the Moon at the horizon. On an open, flat horizon its top edge can show from 18:22 GMT. The fast begins at sunrise, 06:49 GMT: have before then.

For those who keep Wednesday 28 October: moonrise that evening is 17:34 GMT (top edge from 17:26 GMT).

in London: Wed 28 Oct 19:37 GMT to Thu 29 Oct 16:41 GMT.

Traditions differ: Some UK temples keep Karwa Chauth on a different day.

If cloud hides the Moon

Traditions differ, so follow your family’s custom. Some families wait a little longer. Many offer (water) facing the Moon’s direction once moonrise time has passed. Some see the Moon on a video call with family where the sky is clear.

Breaking the fast gently

In many families the wife offers water to the Moon, looks at the Moon and then at her husband through a sieve, and he gives her the first sip of water and the first bite of food. Husbands who keep the fast too follow the same times.

  • After a day without water, sip water slowly first.
  • Start with something light, such as fruit, dates, a little sweet, lassi or soup, before the full meal. Go easy on fried and very sweet food at first.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding, diabetic, or on regular medicines? Ask your GP, midwife or pharmacist before a fast without water. Many families keep a fruit-and-water fast instead, or do the puja without fasting.
  • If you feel faint, dizzy or confused during the day, drink water and eat something. Your health comes first.
